Gilbert and Sullivan were the reigning dramatist and composer, respectively, of the Victorian era. They collaborated on over a dozen comic operas. Gilbert came up with fanciful, absurd storylines and Sullivan musically filled these tales in with memorable tunes. Here’s what host Alexa Petrenko has to say about tonight’s show:
“To celebrate the Victoria Day long weekend, we’ll explore the Victorian-era theatrical partnership of librettist WS Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan, which resulted in 14 comic operas, even though the two did not get along … I’ll play you highlights from their best loved topsy-turvey works: Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, and Gondoliers.”
Sunday Night at the Opera airs tonight at 9 pm on The New Classical Fm.
