Composer Arvo Pärt turns 84 today. He was born on September 11, 1935 in Estonia. His music is deeply lyrical, intimate, with a touch of classical, religious, and Gregorian chant. The featured piece, Summa for String Orchestra, is conducted by Paavo Jarvi. It is based on the text of the Latin Credo. The piece is more complex that it sounds upon a first listen. It was originally written for choir, and the composer re-arranged it for string quartet as well as string orchestra, which in this case emphasizes the many layers of the piece. Have a listen. It’s mysterious and timeless.

Arvo Pärt was born September 11, 1935 in Paide, Jarva County, Estonia.
