We’ve Never Heard Tafelmusik Quite Like This: A Conversation with Elisa Citterio

Station Blog2019-9-10By: Classical Staff

Brilliant violinist Elisa Citterio joined Tafelmusik as Music Director in 2017, moving to Toronto from her native Italy, where she divided her artistic life between orchestral work and an intense schedule as a chamber musician. She has recorded and toured, often as leader or concertmaster, with such ensembles as Dolce & Tempesta, Europa Galante, Accademia Bizantina, Ensemble 415, Concerto Italiano and Accademia del Teatro alla Scala di Milano.

Elisa will lead the ensemble during the opening concerts of Tafelmusik’s season, Sept 19-22 at Koerner Hall, marking the first time the orchestra will play the music of Tchaikovsky! We sometimes think Baroque when we hear the name Tafelmusik, but the orchestra is no stranger to 19th-century composers and has performed and recorded works by Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Chopin. This Tchaikovsky concert program includes a world premiere by Canadian composer Andrew Balfour.

On top of all that news, Tafelmusik is getting set for the release of Vivaldi con amore, the orchestra’s first recording with Elisa Citterio. This all-Vivaldi album showcases Citterio and members of the orchestra in concertos for violin, oboe, bassoon, and lute, underlining the level of virtuosity across the ensemble. Vivaldi con amore will be released in retail stores and on digital platforms on September 20, 2019.

Elisa Citterio joined Mark Wigmore on The Oasis.
