This week, Cocktail Maestro Norm Owen introduces us to Tequila’s less famous but more interesting sibling: Mezcal!
A good Mezcal is a smoky delight that can be sipped neat. But if you want to try it in a cocktail, here are a couple of options:
The Mezcal Old Fashioned
In a rocks glass, place
.5 tsp 2:1 simple syrup (2 parts sugar to 1 part water)
An orange peel – muddle it in the glass to release the oils
5-6 dashes orange bitters
Muddle all this around, then add:
2 oz Mezcal
Stir in the glass until integrated (not too long – taste as you go to reach the right dilution)
Transfer liquids to a fresh glass over a big ice cube, if you have one, and transfer the orange peel for a garnish.
The Naked & Famous
In a cocktail shaker full of ice, add:
.75 oz Mezcal
.75 oz Aperol
.75 oz lime juice
.75 oz Yellow Chartreuse (or Benedictine)
Shake until very cold, then pour into a coupe, and garnish with an orange peel.
