Composer of the Week: Henry Purcell

Station Blog2020-4-13By: Classical Staff

This week: Henry Purcell.

Known as the “English Orpheus,” he is in that all-too-abundant category of composers gone before their time. But in his 36 years, Purcell managed to gild every facet of English musical life, from the court to the stage, from the church to the tavern, with a unique quality of genius, described by Benjamin Britten as “clarity, brilliance, tenderness and strangeness.”
