Looking Back: Midland Railway of Canada

Southern Georgian Bay Spotlight2020-11-23By: Classical Staff

In 1871, the Midland Railway of Canada selected the sparsely populated community of Mundy’s Bay as the new terminus of the Midland Railway, which ran from Port Hope to Beaverton at that time.

The town was surveyed in 1872 and the railway line was completed by 1879. Attracted by the convenience of rail service, settlers soon began to move to the area, now known as Midland. The company sold off lots in town to help finance the settlement, and the population grew quickly.

The growing town thrived on shipping, lumber and grain. Today, it’s home to the Midland Cultural Centre and also attracts tourists drawn to the area’s cottages, resorts and national parks.
