John McDermott on 30 years of music & Hugh’s Room Concert

Station Blog2024-1-26By: Mark Wigmore

John McDermott joined The Oasis host Mark Wigmore in conversation on Robbie Burns Day!

The Scottish Canadian, born in Glasgow, moved to Canada as a youngster. He grew up in a musical family and received early training at the St Michael’s Choir School. After a steady career as a vocalist, his independent release of O Danny Boy was distributed by EMI Canada. This launched the voice that is so famous now. He toured Canada and North America with his signature repertoire, including with The Chieftains. Then it was on to Australia, New Zealand and Europe. He also formed The Irish Tenors and enjoyed numerous public television music specials.

He has also spent much of his career supporting veteran organizations and received the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s Bob Hope Award for his support for veterans’ causes.

Recently John celebrated the 30th Anniversary of his release of O Danny Boy with another album composed of new and archived recordings.

On Saturday, January 27th at 1pm, John McDermott will perform a matinee concert at the new location for a beloved Toronto institution. Hugh’s Room. That’s 296 Broadview Avenue in Toronto’s East End – in between Dundas and Gerrard. He will be joined by his brilliant band and special guests, Dala.
