The Good Life, Work
We all know that the definition of retirement is changing. But here’s an interesting take on what’s happening. Dr. Margret Hovanec wrote a book about this, and she says when it comes to retirement boomer women are from Venus and their men are from Mars.
Boomer Women were the first group of…the first cohort that went out and worked; they got careers, they made those the prime focus of their life. Now, after a lot of women are just hitting the place they want to be, somebody says ‘Dear, I’m going to retire, and I want you to follow me into retirement’ – these women don’t like that!”
She says part of the problem is that women are usually younger than their partners, who will want to retire just as the women feel it’s time to concentrate on their own desires after devoting most of their lives to their families.
“They don’t particularly want to leave the workplace in the same way that men do, because men still, I think, have the old retirement in mind, the ‘One day, I’ll leave work.'”
