The Good Life
Do you believe in God? Fewer than three quarters of Canadians do. According to a Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey, 72% are believers, while 23% are atheists and 6 % have no opinion. It’s true that we’re more likely to have faith as we get older. The poll showed that more than 80 per cent of Zoomers believe in God. Compare that to young people under 25 – only 60 % of them believe. And it seems that our idea of God is different from previous generations. Here’s Keith Howard, director of the United Church’s emerging spirit program.
“People now talk about God, and that can range from something as nebulous as the ‘force’, you know, which is a powerful image of God for many people – they’re not wanting to ascribe very many characteristics to God, but certainly a presence out there that does seem to have power, that does seem to lean more toward good than evil.”
Gender is also a factor in religious faith. Women are more likely to be believers than men.
