David Hoffert, film director, visited “Classical Mornings” with Mike and Jean this morning to talk about The Lost Rhapsody of Leo Spellman, a documentary produced by Brenda and Paul Hoffert, and Jeff Preya.

Six years in the making, The Lost Rhapsody of Leo Spellman tells the true story of a symphony composed while living in a displaced persons camp in Germany during World War II. The symphony was locked in a suitcase for 53 years and was re-discovered, leading to this documentary.

A gala event to raise funds to pay for the film is taking place May 22 at Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Congregation in Toronto. The gala will include live music with Jackie Richardson, Jim Gelcer, Paul Hoffert, Moshe Hammer and Cantor David Guber, along with clips from the documentary. Our own Marilyn Lightstone, host of “Nocturne”, will read from Leo Spellman’s secret diary from 1943 – 1945.
