Here’s what host Alexa Petrenko has to say about this week’s episode:
The Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti was born on Nov 29, 1797. In his 50 years of life he wrote 69 operas, including some wildly successful comic operas, like the Elixir of Love, but perhaps his most gripping work is the tragedy of Lucia di Lammermoor, set to Walter Scott’s dark and brooding tale of the Bride of Lammermoor.
Bringing you one of the most spectacular mad scenes ever, we’ll hear Joan Sutherland in the title role, with Luciano Pavarotti as the ill fated Edgardo. Richard Bonynge conducts the orchestra and chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Sunday Night at the Opera” airs Sunday nights at 9 PM with host Alexa Petrenko.
