Sunday Night at the Opera: The Magic Flute

All Mozart this month to launch the New Year with beloved operas where truth and goodness and love triumph over the bad guys doing their darndest… We’ll start with Die Zauberfloete, a fairy-tale work overlaid with Masonic and humanist symbolism.

The stellar cast includes Nicolai Gedda as Prince Tamino who falls in love with the portrait of Pamina, sung by Gundula Janowitz, Lucia Popp as her mother, the Queen of the Night in possibly the best performance on record,  and Otto Klemperer conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra.  (EMI 1964)
